Planner’s Comments:

I decided to keep the courses as much to the central part of Penicuik Estate as possible, partly because of the location of the three bridges across the river N Esk and partly because the nether regions offer really poor terrain.  To keep runners busy for 40, 60 or 70 minutes this meant more controls than usual, which, in turn, presented more route choice options and made choosing the optimal route a little more difficult.  I also decided to make the penalty for late return a little harsher than usual because there were many high-scoring controls relatively close to the Finish.  For the colour-coded courses the middle of the Estate is best anyway, with plenty of path options for White and Yellow.
The plan seemed to work out pretty well.  Only one runner, Tom Ryan, collected all the controls on their course, but this was with a 2 min penalty.  Several other runners came close to collecting all on all the score courses.
Penicuik provides some very tough terrain, most notably steep, slippery slopes, but it also has some patches of very nice beech wood to run through.  On my first planning visit in the summer large areas were effectively impenetrable because of thick undergrowth, but from mid-October onwards this died back at a rapid rate, and, by and large, I don’t think the vegetation hampered progress on the courses.  The map is not in good shape.  We made over 30 necessary corrections for this event (there were more we could have made), and I think there were about 20 for the previous event.  A complete remap would seem a good thing, but as a very active working estate there will always be a large number corrections.  I apologise for the shortcomings of the map if this affected your run.
Thanks very much to everyone for coming along on a miserable day.  I hope you enjoyed you run.
