Sprint O means different things to different people; perceptions range from the urban street race through the fast park O through to a shorter cross country course in a ‘normal’ forest. To me the sprint O is typified by two characteristics; the requirement to make decisions more quickly than in a middle distance or classic race and terrain where it is possible to run at full speed throughout. Hopetoun in winter meets the second criteria with ease so all that was left for me was to build courses that forced decision making. I aimed for legs that required at least one decision every minute in addition to hanging onto the map through the rhododendron clumps. In a number of legs the route choice option was less important than making a decision and getting moving; either way round the pond, the pony field or the house would be about the same but pausing to make that choice would cost the runner time.
I hope you enjoyed it.
