I love running ultrasprint events, they are great fun. Running hard and keeping on top of the navigation is a big challenge that I enjoy, so when I was asked to be controller to Craig’s planning I jumped at the chance to be involved in such a great event.
My idea for an ultrasprint is to keep things simple and let the speed at which people are going determine the difficulty. I think we achieved this as there were lots of confused looking faces and longer times taken than we expected. Craig initially had more complex courses than you ran and we both agreed that simplifying them was the way forward. Course 1 included some of the more complex bits and I think it was right to have it in there, but not on all 3 courses.
I think the maze was more simple than our previous ultrasprint events. I don’t think this mattered in the slightest, it was still very challenging to avoid making mistakes! The 2 minute penalty was about right, at the top end of the results Mark Nixon made a couple (not naming and shaming, honest!) of mistakes which prevented him from winning overall. Alasdair McLeod’s clean runs brought him victory over Simon Gardner (who also had error free runs) by 24 seconds. Helen Bridle was not far behind as first female, finishing just over 3 minutes ahead of Helen Gardner.
All in all an excellent day out, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The ESOC ultrasprint is fast becoming a yearly fixture so hopefully we will see you next year!
